Speak to me...

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
...of Fringe.

I realize that I'm a bit late, but I just watched the very first episode. I liked it enough to keep watching, but... I need to know what the show's frustration quotient is. I gave up on X-Files around season 5, and I was bitter about it. I don't mind ongoing mysteries/plotlines, but only if they're tied up within a reasonable amount of time. On Babylon 5, Straczynski had a policy: Any given question would never take more than a year or so to be answered. Granted, each answer might raise other questions, but each question was answered.

Also, B5 clearly knew where it was going, whereas it became very apparent that Chris Carter didn't know where he was taking X-Files.

So, where does this fall?

Sketchcrawl # 25

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 10:14 PM

A little painting I did in the car ride back from Philly a few weeks ago in my 3.5 x 5.5 sketchbook.

Speaking of which, if you like sketching you should come to Sketchcrawl this coming Saturday November 21st. If you're in NYC we're meeting in front of the Chelsea Wine Vault at the Chelsea Market at 11 am.

  • Boneshaker discussion up at Publishers Weekly - Spoilers ahoy, for this is a bookclub discussion. Today’s subject matter is the plot and pacing, and I believe that tomorrow will tackle the setting. Please feel free to chime in if you’re interested; and as always, ping me if you have any questions (though I’ll stay out of the bookclub conversation unless I’m invited).

  • Many, many thanks to the CCLaP - For that fine organization has written a positively epic review of Boneshaker. I take back everything I ever said about the Cubs.

  • Shameless Nebula plug - I don’t usually do this kind of thing (let the record reflect, virtually never), but it’d be really swell if Boneshaker’s momentum was nudged by a Nebula nod, for which it is eligible this year. And besides, wouldn’t it be cool to see a steampunk title make the list?

And now for today’s stats for the fabulous urban fantasy adventure about a neurotic vampire/thief and her wealthy blind client, now with Bonus! Cuban drag queen and military intrigue:

Project: Bloodshot
New Words Written: 2057 (meh)
Present Total Word Count: 74,169 words
Goal: 95,000 words by December 12

Things Accomplished in Fiction: Secret negotiations, conversations, and twitterpations; the fruits of investigation are discussed and considered; plans are made; the hipster ghoul has some objections but nobody listens.

Things Accomplished in Real Life: Started a new day-job project; did a little housework; threw in a couple of loads of laundry; contacted PBS and arranged to have my old car donated thereunto, because I have an unholy love of Neil deGrasse Tyson* and Antiques Roadshow, and anyway it’s easier than trying to sell the thing–given all the minor (but copious) things that are wrong with it. Better to see it go to a good cause, I say; and I’ll take the tax deduction, too.

Reason for Stopping: Time to go pull the laundry out of the dryer. Might return to work later this evening, while the husband is off being a ninja.

* I nearly squeed myself to death on a recent episode of NOVA scienceNOW wherein the good astrophysicist was playing basketball with my favorite cognitive theorist. It was sparkly-eyed nerd-hour bliss, I tells ya.

Went through the Knights of the Shroud archives and made sure every actual page has an actual chapter and page number. Still adding chapter descriptions.

And I changed the title of chapter three from "This Little Piggy" to "Man Pigs." If you are a man, don't worry, it isn't about you. And hopefully tonight I'll finally be able to retcon a little teeny piece of dialogue in there, which has been bugging me since I first posted it.

Still tagging pages, too. So while Knights of the Shroud is a print-format comic posted on the web, which makes Scott McCloud sigh, at least I am taking advantage of some of the tools the web makes possible.

Blackmoor

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 1:38 PM
It's come to my attention that CMP has announced the ending of the Blackmoor license. It has also come to my attention that they're saying some negative things about the people who worked for them, and blaming us for the fact that the Age of the Wolf book isn't going to see release.

I feel that I need to say something--but I don't think it'd do much good to get into a war of words with them, and I don't think it'd be professional to make specific accusations in a public forum. So let me just say that there are definitely two sides to what happened, and that the problems that led to this did not originate with the freelancers.

I'm sorry that the fans are the ones ending up disappointed, but we could not, in good conscience, continue to work for CMP. (The fact that almost the entire freelance team--writers, artists, art director, and cartographer, some of whom had never even spoken to one another before the shit hit the fan--agreed on this course of action should be indication enough that there were problems coming down from above.)

I don't feel it appropriate to say anything else, except that I hope that, in all my years of working in this field, I've earned enough of a positive reputation for people not to assume the worst about me, or my fellows on the creative team, in this unfortunate situation.

a CRUCIAL question

I am off to the library in an hour or so to pick up some Georgette Heyer. I've never read Heyer. Where should I start?

Pork carnitas

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
This is a recipe I made up myself* and make it often since we're lovers of Mexican food.
It's all just eyeballed, and you really can't mess it up, promise!!

Pork loin roast (2-3 pounds)
1-2 cups of orange juice (with pulp) -- DON'T OMIT THIS!!
Can of chicken or beef broth (or water, if you don't have the broth)
chopped white onion
5-6 cloves garlic
can of diced green chilis
diced jalepenos if you like it more spicy
cilantro
Salt
Pepper
Any other herbs or spices you like -- cumin, chili powder, cayenne, oregano..etc.

Sprinkle salt and pepper over the loin and place in the crock. Then, either chop or blend the garlic, chilis, jalepenos and cilantro and put in crock over the loin. I've put them in chopped and I've blended them and THEN put them in, and it's good either way. just depends on personal preference. Add in desired spices/herbs to taste.
Pour orange juice** and broth (or water) over the loin and cook on low for 8 hours.
When it's done, let it rest for 15 minutes, then shred. Place shredded meat on a foil-lined cookie sheet and ladle some of the liquid from crock over the top. Place under broiler for 5-10 minutes or until tips of exposed meat barely crisp. Ladle more liquid over the top when you pull the meat out. Serve in warm tortillas with all the fixins!

*there's probably a recipe out there that is similar to what I do, but in this particular case I just threw random stuff in a crock one day and it turned out fabulous!

** we have several authentic Mexican restaurants in my town. One of them is owned by a man who makes the most delicious carne asada ever on the planet, and also the best cabbage salsa. His secret ingredient for both is orange juice. Yum!

monday morning videos!

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
I love how cable reairs things 45 times. I finally was like, yes, must watch White Collar, and last night they had the pilot on, and overnight tonight they're running the other three eps, so it will all be on my DVR, awesome!

Also, have some videos! I watched Friday's Conan because Kris Allen was on (he did great!) and got the bonus of his completely charming interview with Gabby Sidibe from Precious. Here she is admitting to her own NSYNC fannishness, and her friend's crush on Conan:

Also, an animated short about Dock Ellis throwing a no-hitter for the Pirates while high as a kite. It is awesome, and worksafe in terms of sexuality, but perhaps not in terms of showing someone taking tabs of acid or outfielders standing in showers of greenies.

hey guys, my name is mel, and all though ive been watching this comm for a while, this is my first post.
today i decided to make potato soup from stuff i had and it turned out pretty darn delicious! heres what i did:

-2 lbs baby red potatoes, cubed with the peel left on.
-2 cups baby carrots, sliced into rounds
-1 med red onion, chopped
-aprox. 15 garlic cloves crushed, then roughly chopped
-1 1/2 - 2 cups sliced mushrooms
-1 tsp salt
-3 cups chicken stock
*i boil a TB spoon of bacon grease in with the stock for extra flavor.

i combined all this with about an extra half cup of water and put on low for 7 hours (while at work).
afterwards i added:

-1 TB black pepper
-1 cup half and half
-about 1/3 cup instant potatoes (if you like it on the thicker side like me).
-1/2 cup milk

cook on low for about another 15mins, stir once.
then i added about 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese slowly stirring in as it melted.

i topped with sliced green onion and more shredded cheese.

i meant to take a picture, but everyone devoured their bowls before i got the camera out!

enjoy!!

I just made my favorite meal EVER in the crockpot. I want to eat it everyday for the rest of my life! I love it so much I kind of don't want to share the leftovers with my boyfriend tomorrow night because he eats like a wildebeest and that will leave less for me...

I work in a restaurant and we have a jalapeno cilantro sauce that I call "crack sauce". The chef refuses to give me the exact recipe because he knows I'm addicted and I think he likes to hear me beg. I have however somehow cajoled the ingredient list from him but he's still holding onto the measurement info. So I'm sorry if the recipe isn't very detailed- I don't know the exact amounts myself!

Turkey leg soup?

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
So I've got a couple turkey legs in the freezer, and am looking for a recipe for turkey leg soup. Anyone have one?

Also, I just realized that in about 12 days, there will probably be a ton more people looking for leftover turkey recipes... so if you guys know of anything brilliant and delicious to do with turkey leftovers in the crock pot... let me know!! I'm a beginner and love the ideas everyone here has...

D'oh! It's all about the timing

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Ok, so I never use my crock pot on high, but I didn't hear my alarm this morning and slept through when I was supposed to put in the pork roast to make pulled pork.
Recipe is for 12hrs on slow. Does that mean 6 hrs on high?

Please and thank yous all around!

dear yuletide writer

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Dear Yuletide Writer,

First, THANK YOU. I think of Yuletide as more of an opportunity to write something a little different than request something to exacting specifications, so whatever you write is more like a totally awesome bonus than the entire reason I'm participating. In other words, NO PRESSURE. This, and my comments on the assignment, are really just suggestions in case you'd like some.

The most important thing really, as I put in all the prompts, is no deathfic and I prefer a happy ending. I don't mind working for the happy ending; angst that ends well is splendid. Downer endings, though, kinda bum me out. I do tend to read and write romances, and smut, but that doesn't mean I'm expecting that here; gen is fantastic too, as I'm thinking about my love for the characters and their interaction.

Don't think that my prompts are there to guide you in any particular direction; they're more like thought starters and you can feel free to ignore them. I'm not a freak about plot—in many of the stories I love nothing really happens except maybe an internal change in a character or an emotional realization. Characters are always more important to me than plot and I adore great conversation. So feel free to have them just sitting around drinking coffee and talking about Great Clapton Songs, or have them find a way to Save the World from Certain Destruction, or anything in between!

Specifics:

American Idol )

The Philadelphia Story )

Angels and Insects )

Freaks and Geeks )

I do write what I like to read, which for FPF has mostly been Harry Potter plus Star Trek and a few one-offs.

Mostly, thank you in advance; I know that anything you do will be awesome, because it will mean more fic for one of these fandoms, and isn't that the whole point?

Your fan already,

Clio

With the help of Jennik and 52merk, this light has been identified as the Grand Island East Channel Light near Munising, MI. It was built, according to 52merk in 1868 and abandoned more than a 100 years ago. For more info check this link provided by 52merk.
